Police in Georgia and Florida caught a convicted killer who was mistakenly released about two weeks ago from a county jail south of Atlanta, the U.S. Marshals Service said Friday.

Kathan Guzman was apprehended Friday by the U.S. Marshals Service in Florida, spokesman Brady McCarron told The Associated Press.

Guzman, 22, was supposed to be spending the rest of his life in prison after he admitted to strangling his girlfriend, 19-year-old Delila Grayson, who was found dead in a bathtub in August 2022.

Both attended Poinciana High School in Kissimmee, Florida, her mother, Christina Grayson, told CBS affiliate WKMG in 2022, before moving to Georgia to “start a new life” in late 2021. She said her daughter was set to come back to Florida and attend Valencia College to study nursing.

After his release, authorities believed Guzman may have gone back to Florida, specifically Osceola County south of Orlando.

That’s where the victim’s mother lives. “I feel like I’m a sitting duck,” she said.

Grayson told CBS affiliate WKMG on Thursday she believed her daughter’s killer could return to the area. She said officials told her, “Police are supposed to watch my house around the clock until he’s apprehended.”

Jail employees in Clayton County mistakenly released Guzman late last month because they didn’t read the paperwork carefully, failing to see that he’d been convicted of murder and assault by strangulation and was sentenced to life in prison, the county sheriff said.

However, it wasn’t until Tuesday that the Georgia Office of Victim Services couldn’t locate Guzman in the corrections system and notified the prosecutor’s office, Clayton County District Attorney Tasha Mosley said in a statement. Mosley said her employees then checked the jail’s computer system, which appeared to show Guzman had been released, so they immediately notified the sheriff.

Because of the delay in figuring out what had happened, Grayson said she wasn’t told her daughter’s murderer was on the loose until Tuesday, after the district attorney learned of it, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

She told WKMG that Georgia police released Guzman due to a coding error.

Mosle told the Atlanta newspaper that she was extremely frustrated.

“All appropriate paperwork was sent to the appropriate people. I have no idea why they released this man,” Mosley said. “We are just as disappointed and pissed off as everybody else.”

Guzman was arrested “without incident” Friday at a residence in Ocoee, near Orlando, the U.S. Marshals Service said. Booking records showed he was being held in the Orange County Jail.

“Today we tracked him down and got him in custody,” said Michael Sonethavilay, deputy commander of the agency’s Florida/Caribbean Regional Fugitive Task Force.

The agency’s Southeast Regional Task Force, based in Atlanta, “did some digging and found some information that he may be in Florida,” Sonethavilay said. They got in touch with the Florida task force, which worked with the Orange County Sheriff’s Office and picked him up.

As of Friday morning, the Clayton County sheriff’s office had not issued any public notifications about the mistaken release or Guzman’s possible whereabouts. A sheriff’s spokesman told The Associated Press that the agency was preparing a statement that would be sent to residents through the “Nixle” alert system, which would also include a photo of Guzman.

BURNSVILLE, Minn. — The suspect in the killings of three first responders during a standoff in Burnsville last weekend fired more than 100 rounds after claiming he was unarmed, new details from the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension revealed Thursday.

A sexual assault allegation brought authorities to the Burnsville home just before 2 a.m. Sunday, where they made contact with Shannon Gooden.

When officers arrived, they spoke with Gooden. The BCA says he refused to leave the home but said he was unarmed and had children inside.

The officers are said to have negotiated with Gooden for over three hours when he opened fire on the officers in the home around 5:36 a.m., according to the BCA.

The BCA believes Matthew Ruge, Paul Elmstrand and Adam Medlicott were initially shot inside the home. Medlicott and Daniel Wical returned fire, striking Gooden in the leg.

Ruge and Medlicott are said to have been shot a second time as officers were moving to an armored vehicle in the driveway. Paramedic and firefighter Adam Finseth was shot while trying to aid the injured officers.

Finseth, Ruge and Elmstrand were killed by the gunfire. Medlicott has since been released from the hospital.

Investigators say Gooden continued to fire shots out of the home at officers and the armored vehicle. While Gooden was shooting from an upstairs window, officer Javier Jimenez returned fire with his sniper rifle, the BCA reports.

Gooden was reported dead at about 8 a.m., and the family members in the home made it out safely a short time later. A medical examiner said Gooden died by suicide.

The BCA says crime scene personnel recovered several firearms, a large amount of ammunition and numerous casings from the home. They also discovered that Gooden had allegedly fired more than 100 rifle rounds during the incident.

A joint public funeral for Elmstrand, Ruge and Finseth is planned for Feb. 28 at Grace Church in Eden Prairie.

Police charged a 61-year-old man with murder 30 years after he allegedly abducted and killed a 12-year-old girl after she got off a Florida school bus, officials said Thursday.

A DNA match from another case helped police identify Jeffrey Norman Crum as the alleged culprit in Jennifer Odom’s death, Hernando County Sheriff Al Nienhuis said during a press conference. Crum is already serving two life sentences for sexual battery and attempted murder. A grand jury indicted him Monday on first-degree murder, kidnapping and sexual battery charges in the Odom case.

“This is a bad guy who is very violent, who enjoyed violence, who enjoyed hurting people, particularly women, particularly taking advantage of them and raping them,” Nienhuis said. “There’s evidence in his history, and some of it is part of the case, that he was very violent when it came to his acts against women.”

Odom went missing on Feb. 19, 1993, in Pasco County. Law enforcement and volunteers scoured the area, searching 60 square miles, officials said. Six days later, on Feb. 25, a man and woman found Odom’s body in an abandoned orange grove. Her backpack and clarinet case, which were not with her body, were discovered two years later by a couple hunting for scrap metal.

Investigators have focused on a blue truck over the years. Odom’s classmates told officers they saw a faded blue pickup truck slowly following Odom as she walked home.

Hundreds of leads were followed over the years and the investigation was never closed, Nienhuis said. As technology advanced, investigators on the case had evidence tested and retested.

DNA evidence from a separate Pasco County case helped detectives identify Crum as a suspect in Odom’s death. There were no matches or leads in a national DNA database, but in recent years the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which had been comparing DNA to find close matches in the system, identified one of Crum’s family members — which then led them to Crum.

Crum, who police had not identified as a suspect in Odom’s case before then, quickly became the number one suspect in the girl’s death. Dozens of people were interviewed after Crum’s name came up, and police built a case against him.

Police would not share many details because of the open case, but officials said Crum owned a blue truck and was familiar with the area where Odom was taken and killed.

Prosecutors will treat this as a death penalty in the case, State Attorney Bill Gladson said.

“This is every parent’s worst nightmare,” he said. “This is a thing that keeps parents up at night, worrying about their children.”

Nienhuis said he would not be surprised if there were other victims and asked anyone with information to come forward.

The “heavily decomposed” bodies of three people were found in a remote Rocky Mountains camp in Colorado and they may have been there since late last year, authorities said.

A hiker discovered one of the bodies late Sunday and notified authorities, who found the other two after arriving at the campsite Monday, Gunnison County Undersheriff Josh Ashe said.

Two of the bodies were inside a small, zipped-up tent and the other was outside in the camp, which was in a remote wooded area where hikers typically wouldn’t go, Gunnison County Sheriff Adam Murdie said.

There were personal belongings and tarps at the scene and a lean-to built from local logs over a firepit, he said.

“This is not a typical occurrence anywhere, by any means,” said Murdie, noting that his department doesn’t think the discovery implies any risk to hikers or campers in the area.

Ashe told CBS News Colorado investigators “didn’t observe anything on-scene that makes us believe that there was crime involved in this,” including no weapons or signs of violence.

The areas is completely open to hikers, he said.

The sheriff’s department is looking for missing persons reports that might shed light on the situation but hasn’t found any yet, he said., adding that the coroner won’t release the identities of the deceased until their next of kin have been notified.

Based on the “fairly mummified” and advanced decomposition of the bodies, they were likely there through the winter and possibly since last fall, Murdie said. Because of the degradation, autopsies will be difficult and will take at least three weeks, he said.

“Whether they froze to death in the winter or the combination of starved or froze, that’s what it sure seems like,” said the sheriff, noting that the actual causes of death won’t be known until the autopsies are completed.

Murdie said it’s more common for campers or hunters to die of carbon monoxide poisoning by using heaters in enclosed spaces but that this appears to be different because of how the bodies were found and how remote the camp was.

Investigators are trying to “determine what they were actually doing there and why,” said Murdie.

Green Pond, S.C. — A murder investigation was launched after six people were found dead and another hurt in a house fire over the weekend. Officials in Colleton County, South Carolina, announced Monday that the suspect, Ryan Lenard Manigo, has been charged with two counts of murder as well as the attempted murder of the lone survivor, who was described as a juvenile.

The bodies were found late Sunday morning, the Colleton County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. The survivor was airlifted to a hospital from Green Pond, about 42 miles west of Charleston, in critical condition.

The name and ages of the survivor and the six victims weren’t immediately released.

Manigo, 33, was being held at the Colleton Detention Center, and officials said additional charges are possible pending autopsy results, the statement said.

At a news conference Monday, Sheriff Buddy Hill said Manigo was believed to be the brother-in-law of one of the victims and the father of another, and that they had apparently suffered stab wounds.

Arson investigators from the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division are assisting with the case, the sheriff’s office said.

A 22-year-old Texas inmate climbed over a fence and was on the lam for several hours over the weekend before he was captured, officials said. Trent Thompson was apprehended about 250 miles away from the state jail where he was serving a lengthy sentence.

Before his escape, Thompson was last seen at around 11:14 Saturday night at the Formby State Jail in Plainview, Texas, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice said in a statement on social media.

Authorities believe Thompson climbed over a fence and stole a vehicle, Amanda Hernandez, a spokeswoman for the department, told the Associated Press.

Officials released photos of Thompson and urged people to not approach him if they spotted him. Thompson was captured in Coleman, Texas, about 250 miles southeast of Plainview, at around 11:15 Sunday morning, the Department of Criminal Justice said.

Thompson will face felony escape charges, according to the department.

He had already been serving a lengthy sentence for aggravated robbery and aggravated assault on a public servant, with a parole eligibility date in 2037 and a projected release date in 2052, according to online inmate records.

A Maryland father of three is dead after a fight at his child’s school came to his front door.

The man, identified by the Anne Arundel Police Department as 43-year-old Christopher Wright, was allegedly attacked outside his home in Baltimore’s Brooklyn neighborhood on Friday, May 19. CBS News Baltimore and Anne Arundel police described the perpetrators as three or four white men, in their mid-20s to mid-30s.

According to police, the incident began earlier that day, after a confrontation involving one of his children at Brooklyn Park Middle School. Wright’s fiancée, Tracy Karopchinsky, said that after her 14-year-old son got into a fight at the school, three teens and two adults came to the family’s home, reported 11 News

Wright’s family told CBS News Baltimore that the beating was retaliation for the school confrontation.

“Chris came out to tell them, like, he’s not coming out here to fight, and they threatened at one point to come in and get him, and then they said, ‘If he’s not going to fight, then you’re going to fight,'” Karopchinsky told 11 News. She said that all three children were home at the time.

According to 11 News, the incident was caught on security cameras that belonged to Wright. A neighbor’s cameras also captured the beating.

Anne Arundel police said that officers responded to the assault at around 5 p.m. local time. He was transported to an area trauma center for “treatment of a life-threatening injury.”

Wright was hospitalized and died on Saturday, May 20, at around 9:45 p.m., police said.

Police said that detectives from the department’s homicide unit are investigating the incident.

A man who escaped from a Virginia jail this week after being charged in the 2022 killing of a North Carolina sheriff’s deputy was captured in Mexico Thursday, the FBI said.

Alder Marin-Sotelo, 26, was one of two inmates who escaped from Piedmont Regional Jail in Farmville Sunday. He was taken into custody Thursday afternoon by Mexican authorities in the state of Guerrero, in southwestern Mexico, the FBI in Charlotte, North Carolina, said in a post on Twitter.

Officials did not immediately release any details on how he was captured. The investigation into Marin-Sotelo’s exact movements since his escape is ongoing, according to the agency.

“We can breathe a little bit easier knowing that the person who was responsible for the death of a fallen officer is in custody,” Wake County Sheriff Willie Rowe told CBS affiliate WNCN.

Marin-Sotelo escaped from the jail at about 1 a.m. on Sunday and left in a red or burgundy Ford Mustang, FBI officials said. Agents are still trying to locate the car, the FBI said on Thursday.

The other escapee, Bruce Callahan, who was being held on drug charges, left the prison later that day, jail officials said. The jail superintendent said guards didn’t notice the inmates were missing until about 26 hours after Marin-Sotelo escaped. Authorities have not said whether the two escapes are related. Jerry Townsend, superintendent of the jail, told WNCN that officials believe the inmates “manipulated the locking mechanism on the rear exit door” and escaped.

Marin-Sotelo was charged with murder in the August 2022 killing of a North Carolina sheriff’s deputy, who was shot while on duty after he stopped along a dark stretch of road late at night. Ned Byrd was found dead outside his vehicle with his police dog still inside. Marin-Sotelo’s brother, Arturo Marin-Sotelo, was also charged with murder in Byrd’s killing.

Both Marin-Sotelo and Callahan were federal detainees with no affiliations to the area or local charges, the sheriff’s office said.

After he escaped, the FBI and the U.S. Marshals Service offered a combined $70,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Marin-Sotelo.

Byrd’s uncle Walter Penney told WNCN the family was relieved by the news of Marin-Sotelo’s arrest.

“I’m just glad the family can breathe now ’cause we were holding our breath,” Penney said. “It was just a rollercoaster ride all week, trying to figure out how could this happen.”

Santa Rosa, Calif. — An Instagram social influencer who reported an attempted kidnapping of her young children has been convicted of making a false report of a crime, CBS Bay Area reports.

Katie Sorenson, a former Sonoma, Calif. resident, was immediately remanded into custody on the misdemeanor conviction and bail was set at $100,000, said the Sonoma County District Attorney’s Office in a press statement. She faces up to six months in jail.

The 31-year-old Sorenson posted viral Instagram videos in December 2020 claiming a couple tried to kidnap her two children at Michael’s store in Petaluma. The videos were posted about a week after Sorenson had reported the supposed kidnapping attempt to police. In the videos, Sorenson described a number of details about the alleged incident that hadn’t been disclosed to police, the DA’s office said.

Sorensen later went on a local news program to repeat her account of the purported event, identifying a Petaluma couple seen in the Michael’s store surveillance video as the perpetrators.

Before the accusation, Sorenson had enjoyed a modest following on her @motherhoodessentials Instagram account while also posting conspiracy theories espoused by QAnon followers of Democrats and Hollywood elites running child sex-trafficking rings.

Her videos on the alleged kidnapping attempt were viewed more than four million times and gained her tens of thousands of new followers. They’ve since been deleted.

The DA’s office said Sorensen’s report was determined to be false and was resoundingly contradicted by the accused couple as well as the surveillance video from the store.

“This verdict will enable us to hold Ms. Sorensen accountable for her crime, while at the same time helping to exonerate the couple that was falsely accused of having attempted to kidnap two young children,” said District Attorney Carla Rodriguez said in a press statement. “The case is also important in that it illustrates the importance of using social media responsibly.”

Sorensen had been charged with three misdemeanor counts of making a false report of a crime: one to a police dispatcher, another to a police officer on Dec. 7, 2020, and a third a week later to a police detective. She was acquitted on the first two counts and convicted of the third for statements made to the detective.

Sadie Vega-Martinez, who was falsely accused by Sorenson along with her husband Eddie Martinez, told Elle magazine she was “happy” with the verdict.

“After [Sorensen] avoided accountability for years, and then hearing she was found guilty and walked out in handcuffs … yes, justice was served,” she said. “I feel like it’s a step in the right direction for my family. I’m grateful for the support.”

In a statement to The Press-Democrat, Sorenson’s attorney, Charles Dresow said, “The verdict of not guilty as to counts one and two rejects the theory that my client lied to the police on Dec. 7. The jury reviewed the actual evidence and found it to be very different than how the case has been portrayed outside the courtroom. We are disappointed as to count three and will evaluate our options moving forward.”

Sorensen showed no emotion as the verdict was read while family members in the courtroom began sobbing, The Press-Democrat reported. She was quickly placed in handcuffs and led from the courtroom, the report said. She is being held in the Sonoma County Jail.

A sentencing date wasn’t set.

Police on Thursday announced murder charges against the ex-boyfriend of a 20-year-old woman who was killed in 2003, decades after her body was found abandoned on a dirt road in New York.

Edward Holley, now 42, is accused of bludgeoning Megan McDonald to death on March 14, 2003, in the town of Wallkill, police said during a press conference. She died of blunt force trauma to the head.

McDonald was described as outgoing and generous. She was the daughter of retired New York Police Department Detective Dennis McDonald. He died a year before his daughter’s death, according to the Detectives’ Endowment Association.

Karen Whalen, McDonald’s sister, said she never gave up hope that an arrest would be made. She said she had looked forward to a day when she can remember her slain sister without wondering who the killer was.

“The monster has a face and a name and he is in jail where he belongs,” she said.

Police interviewed Holley four times over the course of their investigation, Joseph Kolek, a New York State Police captain, said. He provided contradictory stories and alibis that were disproved by several witnesses, according to the criminal complaint.

“We believe this crime was intimate partner violence,” Kolek said. “Additionally, Ed Holley owed Megan a substantial sum of money.”

McDonald and Holley dated until shortly before the homicide. McDonald had just started dating someone else before she was killed.

On March 13, 2003, McDonald told friends she was skipping a party because Holley was there, according to the criminal complaint. Witness statements from that night show McDonald tried, unsuccessfully, to get marijuana from a number of people. Holley had been her main supplier. Investigators believe McDonald turned to Holley as a “last resort.”

Police spoke with numerous witnesses who were around that night. Officials say they performed hundreds of interviews over the course of the investigation. Those interviews, along with physical evidence, eventually pointed them to Holley.

Some of the physical evidence was gathered from McDonald’s car, where she was killed, police said. The car was left parked at a different location from where McDonald’s body was found.

“Throughout the years, there’s been tremendous advances in DNA technology. As those progressions in DNA technology have come about, we’ve tried to leverage those things and resubmit evidence for further DNA analysis and that’s what we’ve done in this case,” Kolek said.

Holley was already in custody when police executed the arrest warrant, officials said. He had been arrested in October of 2021 after a narcotics investigation. Holley was released on probation, which he violated. He was returned to jail in late February.

James Whalen, McDonald’s brother-in-law, called Holley a monster.

“This is a vile human being capable of brutally murdering a beautiful, lively 20-year-old woman and using every effort to keep his part in this heinous crime a secret for 20 years,” he said.
