While it is common for fans to jeer opposing players during pregame lineups, the boos that serenaded Ohtani were uniquely loud compared to those for his Dodgers teammates.

Ohtani didn’t quiet the crowd either when he came up for his first plate appearance of the game, striking out to lead off the first inning.

When Ohtani entered free agency in the winter of 2023, he visited the Blue Jays as a potential suitor before signing with the Dodgers.

The Blue Jays gave Ohtani a hat and a jacket for Decoy, Ohtani’s dog. Blue Jays manager John Schneider joked he would like both of those gifts back.

“I hope he brought his hat, the Blue Jay hat that he took from us in our meeting. I hope he brought it back, finally,” Schneider said Thursday.

“And the jacket for Decoy,” he added. “It’s like, ‘Give us our stuff back already.’”

Ohtani smiled when he heard about Schneider’s remarks and simply said through a translator, “It’s in my garage.”

The Blue Jays manager said he wasn’t sure how close the team came to signing the Japanese superstar.

“When we met with him, you felt good about it, and you felt good about the feedback he was giving about our organization and opportunity here,” Schneider said.

“But you never really know what a player’s feeling in free agency, and there’s a lot of things that have to line up for them personally, too. So, you can’t really think about what if. You think about the 26 (players) that we have.”

The Dodgers will start Blake Snell, while the Blue Jays are sending rookie Trey Yesavage to the mound. Game 1 is on Friday at 8 p.m. ET at the Rogers Centre in Toronto.

Snell has nearly as many Cy Young awards (two) as Yesavage has career regular season starts (three).

Yesavage made his Major League debut on Sept. 15 and quickly became a key part of the Blue Jays starting rotation. When the 22-year-old steps on the mound on Friday, he will have made more career postseason starts (four) than regular-season starts.

In the postseason, Yesavage has a 2-1 record in three starts with a 4.20 ERA.

Yesavage beat the New York Yankees with 5.1 scoreless, hitless innings in Game 2 of the Division Series as he struck out 11. He lost Game 2 of the AL Championship Series when he allowed five runs in four innings, and then won Game 6 of the ALCS on Sunday when he gave up two runs in 5.2 innings.

Yesavage began the season at Class A Dunedin and rose through the minor leagues rapidly. Hewas promoted to High-A Vancouver on May 20, Double-A New Hampshire on June 12, and Triple-A Buffalo on Aug. 12.

Yesavage will be tasked with holding down a Dodgers lineup that is littered with All-Stars and MVP winners.

Snell, on the other hand, was limited to 11 starts this season. In those starts, he was excellent, as he had a 5-4 record with a 2.35 ERA in just over 61 innings pitched.

In three postseason starts, Snell has raised his game to another level. He has a 3-0 record with a 0.86 ERA in 21 innings pitched, and has struck out 28 batters while walking just five.

In 15 career postseason starts, Snell has a 7-3 record and a 2.58 ERA. He will be tasked with facing the Blue Jays, an opponent he is familiar with from his time with the Tampa Bay Rays.

In 16 career games against the Blue Jays, Snell has a 5-4 record with a 2.39 ERA in 79 innings.

The Dodgers became the first defending champions to make the World Series when they swept the Milwaukee Brewers in the NLCS in 16 years. The Philadelphia Phillies made the World Series in 2009 after winning in 2008 but lost to the Yankees.

If the Dodgers want to add their name to the history books as repeat champions, they are going to have to go through a strong Toronto Blue Jays team to do it.

The Blue Jays’ last championship came in 1993, when they repeated as World Series champions behind Joe Carter’s legendary, series-ending, walk-off home run in Game 6. Only seven franchises have successfully defended their title in the sport’s history.

Game 1 of the World Series starts at 8 p.m. ET on Friday and will be broadcast on FOX.

Dodgers superstar Shohei Ohtani then hit the first World Series home run of his career in the seventh, but it was too little too late for the Dodgers.

Ohtani was booed ahead of the game by Blue Jays fans.

By the ninth inning, the Toronto crowd broke into a unified chant, shouting, “we don’t need him!”

While Dodgers pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto pitched a one-run complete game in a historic outing for Los Angeles at the Rogers Centre, all eyes were on superstar Shohei Ohtani after he was booed and taunted by the Toronto crowd in Game 1.

During the Blue Jays’ 11-4 blowout win in the opener Friday, the crowd broke into a chant of “We don’t need him!” referencing Ohtani’s rejection of the Blue Jays’ recruitment offer in the winter of 2023, when he joined the Dodgers instead.

Ohtani didn’t get a hit until the eighth inning on Saturday, but it was a big one as it helped spark the Dodgers’ rally to extend the lead from 3-1 to 5-1.

Ohtani was seen giving a celebration after the hit.

The score held, as Ohtani’s fellow Japanese teammate Yoshinobu Yamamoto earned the win, pitching a complete game for the second straight outing.

It was the first World Series complete game since Johnny Cueto in 2015 and the first time a pitcher has pitched a complete game in back-to-back postseason games since Curt Schilling in 2001.
