Police say Assa Diawara, 30, of Queens, was the woman caught on camera before allegedly abandoning a baby girl who was found alive at Penn Station in Manhattan Monday morning.

She was arrested on charges of abandonment of a child and endangering the welfare of a child early Wednesday morning, an update from the New York Police Department said.

Police had asked the public for help identifying the woman seen on video carrying the baby.

The infant was discovered around 9:30 a.m. local time Monday on the stairway leading to the southbound No. 1, 2, and 3 trains at the 34th Street–Penn Station stop, according to police reports.

Officials were alerted after an anonymous caller reported seeing the baby left unattended on the steps at West 34th Street and 7th Avenue.

When first responders from the FDNY and NYPD arrived, they found the baby wrapped in a blanket, conscious and alert. The baby was then taken to Bellevue Hospital.

Her umbilical cord was still attached, FOX 5 New York reported.

The identity of the infant’s parents has not yet been publicized.

Per New York’s Safe Haven Law, parents are allowed to legally and safely surrender newborns at hospitals, police precincts, or fire stations without facing criminal charges as long as the child is left in the care of responsible personnel.

Vance made the remark as early voting began Saturday in New York City, where Mamdani, the frontrunner in the race, is trying to fend off challengers Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa.

“I want to speak to the memory of my aunt. Who stopped taking the subway after September 11th because she did not feel safe in her hijab,” Mamdani said in a clip of a Friday campaign event that Vance shared.

“According to Zohran, the real victim of 9/11 was his auntie who got some (allegedly) bad looks,” Vance said.

Mamdani also said Friday, “I want to speak to the Muslim who works for our city, whether they teach in our schools or walk the beat for the NYPD, New Yorkers who all make daily sacrifices for the city they call home, only to see their leaders spit in their face.”

“I want to speak to every child who grows up here marked as the other, who is randomly selected in a way that never quite feels random, who feels that they carry a stain that can never be cleaned. Growing up in the shadow of 9/11, I have known what it means to live with an undercurrent of suspicion in this city,” Mamdani added.

Mamdani accused Cuomo this week of “Islamophobic rhetoric” after the former governor joined a radio show and its host speculated that Mamdani would be “cheering” if New York City faced another 9/11-style attack.

During an appearance on WABC’s “Sid & Friends in the Morning” on Thursday, Cuomo questioned Mamdani’s ability to lead the city through a crisis situation.

“Any given moment, there’s a crisis, and people’s lives are at stake. God forbid, there’s another 9/11. Can you imagine Mamdani in the seat?” Cuomo asked host Sid Rosenberg.

“He’d be cheering,” Rosenberg retorted.

“That’s another problem,” said Cuomo, before returning to his hypothetical question: “But could you imagine that?”

During a Mamdani campaign event in Manhattan later on Thursday, a reporter asked Mamdani if Cuomo’s comments were Islamophobic.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., added the bill to the calendar last week, positioning it for a potential vote this week, according to Axios. The outlet noted that House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., told reporters he would bring the bill up for a vote in the House if it passes the Senate.

Jeffries echoed one of Democrats’ concerns about the legislation, which is that it does not help furloughed employees.

“My understanding is that that is not a comprehensive bill that actually is designed to reopen the government while at the same time addressing the issues that need to be confronted on behalf of the American people, which include lowering the high cost of living and decisively addressing the Republican healthcare crisis,” Jeffries told reporters on Monday.

TRUMP INSTRUCTS PENTAGON TO ENSURE TROOPS ARE PAID DESPITE GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN

President Donald Trump recently bypassed Congress and signed a directive ordering the Department of War to ensure that U.S. troops are paid despite the ongoing shutdown.

The White House said the move is necessary to protect “military readiness” as the budget standoff continued. The order, issued as National Security Presidential Memorandum-8 (NSPM-8), directs the department to use available fiscal year 2026 funds to cover military pay and allowances. Though it is unclear how the Pentagon is reallocating funds to comply with the order.

While Democrats objected and said the president overstepped, Trump cited his Article II powers as commander in chief in issuing the order, which covers active-duty troops and reservists on service orders.

And you know what that precious resource is? Your people, your citizens, your businesses and the money that they spend,” Steve Moore, the founder of Unleash Prosperity and a former Trump administration economic advisor, told Fox News Digital.

Unleash Prosperity’s Vote With Your Feet campaign tracks data from the IRS and other agencies to create interactive maps showing how population and wealth are moving across the country. The campaign site has interactive maps depicting the movement of people and money, as well as their politics.

Moore said that while the first “big wave” of migration the group tracked in the U.S. occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic, as residents of closed blue states moved to open red states, the pattern goes beyond that.

“Our study looks over the last 10 years. So, it’s not just the COVID effect,” he explained.

The former Trump administration economic advisor said “there’s no question” that the country’s politics will become more polarized if the population shift continues. Moore said it used to be that New Yorkers going to Florida would vote for Democrats in the Sunshine State. But now, he said, those moving out of New York and New Jersey are doing so for ideological reasons as well as economic ones. He also noted that Florida and Texas have become more red, not more purple, as people flee blue states.

Moore declined to comment on specific candidates running for New York City mayor or New Jersey governor, but he said that politicians looking to hold those offices should know that “raising taxes in New Jersey or New York would be a disaster.”

“I believe if New York were to raise its income taxes — [like] some of the politicians are talking about — that Wall Street would no longer be located in New York City. It would move out,” he said. Moore touched on New Jersey as well, saying that many residents are fleeing the state because of its high taxes.

“New Jersey is the third highest taxed state in the country — one of the highest income taxes, one of highest business taxes — and small businesses and big businesses can’t do business there anymore. So, the policies need to be reversed,” he told Fox News Digital.

The four states that have lost the most people and the most income are New York, California, New Jersey and Illinois, according to Moore. He pointed to a common denominator that all four states share — “very, very high taxes.”

In addition to taxes and politics, Moore said crime and bad schools are other factors pushing blue state residents to flee. He said he sees crime as another kind of tax.

“I think crime is a tax. And if you can’t feel safe walking down the streets of your neighborhood, you’re going to want to leave,” he said.

Moore also said that if blue states were to allow school choice — a move that some say would allow low-income families to give their children better educational opportunities — they would see fewer residents leaving.

Moore said red state lawmakers, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, have handled crime control well and have kept taxes low, something he said are the keys to their success. He said lawmakers in blue states should aim to be more pro-business, to fight crime and to get rid of “all of the things that make cities today unlivable.” He pointed to the example former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani set when the Republican cleaned up the country’s most populated city.

While he had criticisms of lawmakers in blue cities and states, Moore pointed to examples of Democrats who were doing well with population retention: San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie and Houston Mayor John Whitmire.

Moore described Lurie as a “very pro-business, moderate Democrat” and said he is “cleaning up” the city and that people are returning. Moore said Whitmire was a “no-nonsense” lawmaker who is fighting crime, cutting expenses and keeping taxes low.

“That’s what Democratic mayors and governors should be doing if they want to save their cities and states,” Moore said.

During a mayoral debate last night hosted by Spectrum News New York 1, Mamdani said he would reorganize the NYPD and “trust” dispatchers to “make the determination as to whether there was any indication of violence.” He asserted that this approach has been proven to work “elsewhere in the country.”

“That’s probably the worst idea I’ve heard of in a long time,” said Joseph Giacalone, a retired NYPD sergeant and adjunct professor of criminal justice at Penn State Lehigh Valley.

“I don’t have a clue what he’s talking about and neither does he,” he added. “My question is, what happens when the dispatcher is wrong and someone dies? Is it an oops? The liability the city would be taking on with this idea will be off the charts.”

Mamdani has supported replacing police officers with social workers and “transit ambassadors” on certain 911 calls.

If it’s been done elsewhere, Giacalone questioned where that was, what happened and how that city’s population stacked up against the Big Apple’s.

“This is NYC, not Sheboygan,” he said.

Sheboygan is a Wisconsin city on Lake Michigan with about 50,000 residents. New York has more than 8 million.

MAMDANI’S ATTEMPTED POLICE PIVOT CONTINUES AFTER ADAMS ASKS ‘WHERE WAS HE?’

Mamdani’s campaign did not immediately respond to emailed questions about the proposal.

“Zohran Mamdani’s plan to shift the responsibility of determining—over the phone—whether or not a law enforcement response is needed for a 911 call involving an emotionally disturbed person is reckless and dangerous,” said retired NYPD lieutenant and “Finest Unfiltered” podcast host John Macari. “This proposal will not save lives or reduce the workload of law enforcement; it will make their jobs harder and endanger civilians, dispatchers and first responders alike.”

He said anyone who has experience responding to calls involving emotionally disturbed people knows they are both “unpredictable and volatile.”

“I’ve personally responded to hundreds of them during my career, and I can tell you firsthand, no one can safely assess the threat level of an emotionally disturbed individual over the phone,” he told Fox News Digital.

He said under the stress of making the wrong decision, dispatchers could likely err on the side of caution and send police anyway.

“Mamdani’s idea isn’t a plan, it’s a talking point,” he said. “It appears to have been drafted without any consultation with dispatchers, first responders or the families of those struggling with mental illness. If implemented, it will cost lives and further strain a system already stretched to its limits.”

Macari, who supports Republican Curtis Sliwa in the race, added that he believes Mamdani’s primary win over Andrew Cuomo was the result of voters rejecting the former governor, not widespread support for his agenda.

Mamdani, who this year has insisted he would not defund the NYPD if elected mayor, has previously called for doing so and tearing the department down.

“Defund it. Dismantle it. End the cycle of violence,” he wrote on X in December 2020, complaining about NYPD overtime and calling the department “wicked & corrupt.”

Before that, he claimed the department “is racist, anti-queer & a major threat to public safety.” Separately, he has called for taking money from the NYPD budget and spending it on homeless services.

“Together, we can tax the rich, heal the sick, house the poor, defund the police & build a socialist New York,” he wrote.

Giacalone said that while Mamdani’s rhetoric may have changed, he still views him as a “defund the police” candidate.

“Like the saying goes, when someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time,” he said. “He is a defund the police, abolish the police candidate. Plain and simple. Once again, the people voting for a candidate like this don’t live in the crime areas where things will turn worse.”

The charges against James stem from her 2020 purchase of a home in Norfolk, Virginia. Prosecutors allege that James misled a bank about the nature of the residence in order to obtain more favorable loan conditions.

The indictment states that James misrepresented the financial institution in claiming it would be her secondary residence, and instead rented it out to a family.

According to the indictment, the lower interest rate would allow James to save nearly $19,000 over the course of the 30-year loan.

James entered the not guilty plea herself to U.S. District Judge Jamar K. Walker.

She is being represented in the case by defense attorney Abbe Lowell, and by Andrew Bosse, a former assistant U.S. attorney based in Norfolk who formerly headed up the office’s criminal division.

James’ arraignment is the latest in a string of prosecutions brought against the president’s perceived political foes, despite objections from career prosecutors — some of whom have since been fired or resigned.

James, a Democrat, has long-drawn Trump’s ire after she campaigned for attorney general in 2016 largely on vows to investigate Trump’s actions and businesses.

She also successfully secured a $450 million civil fraud case against him last year, though an appeals court later tossed the financial penalty portion of the case.

“This is nothing more than a continuation of the president’s desperate weaponization of our justice system,” James said in a statement after she was indicted.

“These charges are baseless, and the president’s own public statements make clear that his only goal is political retribution at any cost,” she added.

Her indictment, like the indictment of former FBI Director James Comey, was presented to a grand jury by former White House aide Lindsey Halligan, whom President Donald Trump installed as the acting U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia last month.

Trump, in September, said he would install Halligan as the top prosecutor for the Eastern District of Virginia, replacing interim attorney Erik Siebert, who resigned under pressure to indict both Comey and James.

“No one is above the law. The charges as alleged in this case represent intentional, criminal acts and tremendous breaches of the public’s trust,” Halligan said in a statement. “The facts and the law in this case are clear, and we will continue following them to ensure that justice is served.”

After the arraignment, it is likely that she will file a motion to dismiss her case for vindictive and selective prosecution, following similar steps taken by Comey’s legal team in Alexandria earlier this week.

She will also file a motion to dismiss her case based on what her lawyers will argue was the unlawful appointment of Halligan in securing her indictment.

Lowell, her attorney, has described the case against her as “improper political retribution,” and vowed they would “fight these charges in every process allowed in the law.”

The Justice Department did not immediately respond to Fox News’s request for comment on the case, or whether Halligan or Keller wouldbe joined by any other federal prosecutors in the Eastern District of Virginia.

Speaking to reporters outside the court on Friday, James said the Justice Department is being used as a tool of “revenge,” and a “vehicle of retribution.”

“But my faith is strong,” she told the group that had massed outside the courthouse in Norfolk, Virginia, hours earlier. “I have a belief in the justice system.”

“Never cow down or break or bend. So there is no fear today,” she said. “I will not be deterred.”

Judge Walker set a trial date for Jan. 26, 2026, and ordered parties to appear back in court for motions hearings in early December.

On Friday, Democrat mayoral nominee and frontrunner Zohran Mamdani scored an endorsement from House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y. Earlier this week, former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who is running as an independent mayoral candidate, was formally endorsed by current New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

“Tomorrow, I vote on the first day of early voting,” Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa said Friday on “The Will Cain Show.” “That should put a nail into the coffin for anybody who thinks I’m dropping out.”

Sliwa has been facing pressure to drop out of the race to boost the chances of Cuomo defeating Mamdani.

Meanwhile, the New Jersey Division of Elections said every county in the state “will designate in-person early voting locations that will be open Saturday, October 25, 2025 – Sunday, November 2, 2025 (the in-person early voting period).

Officials said the migrants are from Senegal, Mali and Guinea and were busted for allegedly selling counterfeit items in the area.

ICE said the protesters who were detained have criminal backgrounds.

PROTESTS ERUPT AS ICE AGENTS RAID NYC CHINATOWN STREET VENDORS ALLEGEDLY SELLING COUNTERFEIT GOODS

DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin told Fox News that ICE and federal partners conducted a “targeted, intelligence-driven enforcement operation” on Canal Street focused oncriminal activity related to the sale of alleged counterfeit goods.

“During this law enforcement operation,rioters who wereshouting obscenities, became violent and obstructed law enforcement duties,including blockingvehicles and assaulting law enforcement,”McLaughlin wrote in a statement. “Already,onerioterhas been arrested for assault on a federal officer.”

During a news conference Tuesday night, Murad Awawdeh, vice president of advocacy at the New York Immigration Coalition, said between 15 and 40 vendors were arrested and at least two locals were taken into custody for protesting and blocking their arrest efforts.

City officials quickly moved to distance themselves from the raid.

Mayor Eric Adams’ press secretary, Kayla Mamelak Altus, told Fox News that New York City “never cooperates with federal law enforcement on civil deportation matters, in accordance with local laws” and had “no involvement in this matter.”

“Mayor Adams has been clear that undocumented New Yorkers trying to pursue the American Dream should not be the target of law enforcement, and resources should instead be focused on violent criminals,” she said.

Democratic socialist mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani weighed in on X, calling the Manhattan raid “aggressive and reckless.”

“Federal agents from ICE and HSI — some in military fatigues and masks — descended on Chinatown today in an aggressive and reckless raid on immigrant street vendors,” Mamdani wrote in a post. “Once again, the Trump administration chooses authoritarian theatrics that create fear, not safety. It must stop.”

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, who has notably made a lane to the right of far-left Democratic Party figures like New York Assemb. Zohran Mamdani, will rally with Spanberger in the crucial Hampton Roads area.

The former Virginia congresswoman plans to hold multiple rallies in the Tidewater alone before Election Day, including another with former President Barack Obama across the ‘roads’ in Norfolk.

“Governor Shapiro this weekend is headed to New Jersey and Virginia to help elect Mikie Sherrill and Abigail Spanberger; two more Democratic governors who will focus every day on getting stuff done, delivering results for hardworking families and protecting freedom in their states,” Shapiro campaign spokesman Manuel Bonder told Fox News Digital on Friday.

Shapiro also plans to stump for Rep. Mikie Sherrill in New Jersey as she hopes to keep Trenton in Democratic hands.

Shapiro – who has announced he will run for reelection to Harrisburg in 2026 and has not officially indicated interest in a presidential bid – is one of several Democrats whose names repeatedly come up in such conversation – including Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker, Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, California Gov. Gavin Newsom and Kentucky Gov. Andrew Beshear.

He was also the reported runner-up to Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz in Kamala Harris’ 2024 veepstakes.

Shapiro lambasted antisemitic behavior at the University of Pennsylvania following the Hamas attack on Israel, while separately adding of Mamdani’s view of the Jewish State:

“You have to speak and act with moral clarity, and when supporters of yours say things that are blatantly antisemitic, you can’t leave room for that to just sit there.”

While Shapiro has faced criticism from Republicans in his own state for supporting former Gov. Tom Wolf’s COVID-era shutdowns and for the current budget impasse, he’s also been a rare Democrat to earn praise from some in the GOP.

Jack Ciattarelli, the Republican nominee in New Jersey’s sweeps, namedropped Shapiro favorably enough times that Newark Mayor Ras Baraka – then running for governor – suggested he cross the Delaware and run in the Keystone State instead.

“[Pennsylvania doesn’t] have a property tax crisis [like New Jersey], they don’t have a business climate crisis, they don’t have an energy crisis,” Ciattarelli said, contrasting the two neighbors.

Pennsylvania Republicans, however, disputed some of those descriptions, with state Rep. Russ Diamond, R-Lebanon, and Sen. David Argall, R-New Ringgold, recently drafting bills to eliminate property taxes altogether.

State Sen. Doug Mastriano, R-Gettysburg, who challenged Shapiro in 2022 and is being urged by the conservative wing to do so again in 2026, also blasted Shapiro’s budget proposals as “fantasy,” warning in a statement that “eventually, the funds from ‘we the people’ will run dry.”

Shapiro has also been vocal on election law itself, rebuking the president over a Truth Social post potentially foreshadowing an end to mail-in balloting.

“Donald Trump can sign whatever the hell executive orders he wants. . . . But he can’t change the Constitution with an executive order, and the Constitution gives the authority to set our election rules to the states.” Shapiro said.
