There are a lot of questions that need answering for the 1-6 Miami Dolphins, but one of them was why Jaylen Waddle, the Dolphins’ top receiver without Tyreek Hill on the field for the remainder of the season, didn’t see much action in Sunday’s blowout loss to the Cleveland Browns.

Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has an answer, and it’s likely Dolphins fans don’t want to hear it.

“I think with that, some of it has to do with being able to see guys, with their guys also up front and our guys,” Tagovailoa told reporters Tuesday.

“I’m not the tallest guy in the back there either. So, being able to see, and then sometimes when that happens, you don’t want to just throw it blindly, and you gotta progress. So, I think that has some merit to reasons as to why that happened for Waddle.”

It’s no secret Tagovailoa, listed at 6-foot-1, isn’t the tallest quarterback in the NFL. But it’s another thing to admit he isn’t able to see his receivers during plays.

It may be true, but obviously having sight of your offensive weapons is key for any quarterback. Nonetheless, Tagovailoa targeted Waddle, who stands at 5-foot-10, just four times in the 31-6beatdown on the road. He caught just one pass for 15 yards.

CONTROVERSIAL FORMER NFL LINEMAN RIPS DOLPHINS AMID POOR START: ‘THIS IS A DUMPSTER FIRE’

Waddle hasn’t had this few targets or catches in a single game since Week 14 against the Houston Texans last season. In that game, Waddle didn’t have one catch and was only targeted twice, though he suffered a knee injury.

But Tagovailoa was struggling all day for the Dolphins, and the Browns’ defense intercepted three passes and limited Tagovailoa to 12 completed passes for 100 yards in the loss.

Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel had Tagovailoa working with his teammates like a well-oiled machine, but this season has proved hard to get that same timing on each week.

McDaniel noted on Tuesday that he and Tagovailoa had an hour-and-a-half meeting the day prior, which he called “great.”

“I think there’s zero uncertainty with Tua on my conviction in him and my belief in him,” McDaniel told reporters. “We’re both very eager to do better at our jobs, and we’re both very committed and trusting of each other to respond to what is necessary for the team to do better.”

Recreational activities will not be part of the Baltimore Ravens locker room, at least for the foreseeable future.

Coach John Harbaugh made the decision to strip the room of video game consoles, ping-pong tables, cornhole boards and other items, The Baltimore Sun reported.

The decision was made following the Ravens Week 4 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. The Ravens dropped their next two games, bringing the team’s losing skid to four.

Injuries have impacted the Ravens this season as the team fell to its current 1-5 record. A 41-17 defeat of the Cleveland Browns in Week 2 marked Baltimore’s lone victory this season.

RAVENS COACH JOHN HARBAUGH BELIEVES TEAM CAN MAKE PLAYOFFS DESPITE ROUGH START

Lamar Jackson has missed multiple games this season but could soon return to action. The two-time NFL MVP remains listed as questionable for this Sunday’s game against the Chicago Bears, but he was a limited practice participant on Wednesday.

An Instagram post from Ravens punter Jordan Stout that appeared to show Jackson playing a video game could have contributed to the decision to remove certain items from the locker room. The post featured the caption, “Hard at work.”

The Ravens advanced to the AFC Championship game, and Jackson received MVP honors for a second time. Baltimore won a playoff game last season and entered 2025 with expectations of contending for a Super Bowl title.

It remains to be seen whether pulling gaming consoles and other recreational items will have an impact on the Ravens as the team tries to turn its season around.

Less than a full week after New York Jets owner Woody Johnson trashed Justin Fields and head coach Aaron Glenn refused to name a starting quarterback for a “competitive advantage,” the Week 8 decision has been made without much of a choice.

Fields has struggled since signing a two-year, $40 million deal with Gang Green, to the point he was benched at halftime for veteran Tyrod Taylor in their Week 7 loss to the Carolina Panthers.

However, Taylor sustained a knee injury in that game and will miss Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals, leaving the Jets no choice but to start Fields.

Johnson expressed his disappointment in Fields during the NFL owners’ meetings earlier this week.

“It’s hard when you have a quarterback with the rating that we’ve got,” he said. “He has the ability, but something is not jiving. If you look at any head coach with a quarterback like that, you are going to see similar results across the league. You have to play consistently at that position, and that’s what we’re going to try to do for the remainder of the season.”

NFL HITS GIANTS WITH HEFTY FINES FOR CONCUSSION PROTOCOL VIOLATION DURING EAGLES GAME

Fields has started six games with the Jets, missing Week 3 because he was in the concussion protocol. He has compiled a 91.1 passer rating this season.

Reports indicated the Jets were planning on moving toward Taylor because several people on the Jets thought he was the better quarterback.

As recently as Friday, Glenn refused to name a quarterback because he simply did “not want to” get into a heated back-and-forth with the media. He added that the players knew who the quarterback would be.

Former NFL defensive tackle Gerald McCoy has experienced tremendous personal tragedies in just a few short weeks.

During that span, the six-time Pro Bowler mourned the loss of five of his former teammates and NFL colleagues — all of whom died before their 40th birthdays.

The Baltimore Ravens announced the death of Super Bowl champion Arthur Jones on Oct. 3. He was 39. McCoy and Jones were members of the 2010 NFL Draft class and spent time training together leading up to the scouting combine. On Saturday, reports surfaced about the death of former running back Doug Martin.

Earlier this month, McCoy also learned that his uncle passed away.

Shortly after learning of Martin’s death, McCoy urged others to check in with their loved ones. “Man that’s the 5th teammate I’ve lost. Yea I’m done for the day. Yall go check on yall people man,” McCoy wrote on X.

McCoy told The Athletic he hoped to avoid being moved to a state of detachment due to the series of heartbreaking events.

“You don’t want to get to a point where you become numb to it,” McCoy told the outlet. “It’s just hard to deal with, and it’s unbelievable. This keeps happening.”

DETAILS EMERGE IN DEATH OF EX-NFL STAR DOUG MARTIN

In addition to Martin’s death, McCoy has recently contended with the loss of former NFL players: Geno Hayes, Daniel Te’o-Nesheim, Mike Williams and Vincent Jackson. McCoy spent time with all of those players at different points in his lengthy stint with the Buccaneers.

Te’o-Nesheim and Jackson were posthumously diagnosed with chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE), a neurodegengerative disease that has been linked to repeated head trauma.

Martin’s family sought assistance all the way up until the final hours of his life.

“Doug’s parents were actively seeking medical assistance for him and had contacted local authorities for support,” a statement from Martin’s former agent, Brian Murphy, read.

“Feeling overwhelmed and disoriented, Doug fled his home during the night and entered a neighbor’s residence two doors down, where he was taken into custody by police. An investigation into what transpired as he was detained is underway.”

McCoy recalled the special bond he developed with Jackson and his admiration for how he lived up to his nickname “The Ultimate Pro.”

“How he carried himself in the building, how he did interviews, how he practiced,” McCoy said. “How he took care of his body, how he was with his family, everything. That’s who V-Jack was. So when we lost him, it was like, ‘not him, of all people.’ He was Captain America. So that one hit us probably the hardest.”

McCoy finished his decade-long pro football career with 59.5 sacks. He transitioned to broadcasting after his playing days ended and currently works as an NFL Network analyst.

The Los Angeles Chargers dominated the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday night. The 37-10 defeat dropped the Vikings’ record to 3-4.

But much of the postgame chatter focused on coach Kevin O’Connell’s decision not to pull quarterback Carson Wentz from the blowout.

Wentz was dealing with some discomfort in his non-throwing shoulder. He was sacked five times on Thursday, which appeared to further aggravate the shoulder he was already nursing. The shoulder issue, coupled with the scoreboard, raised concerns about keeping the veteran quarterback on the field longer than many perceived as necessary.

Wentz was noticeably grimacing throughout the majority of the game.

After the game, O’Connell explained his decision to stick with Wentz for most of the game.

“We kept on checking in [with Wentz],” the coach told reporters. “Maybe getting Max [Brosmer] ready to go. Tyler [vice president of player health and performance, Tyler Williams] was coming to me a lot tonight, but every time he seemed to update me on that. Carson was sore going into it. He took obviously quite a few hits—but he was able to—I asked him multiple times where he was at and he said he was good and wanted to keep going.”

“It did seem like he was in pain there a couple times.”

J.J. McCarthy was inactive Thursday. The second-year quarterback started the first two games of the season but has been sidelined since then with an ankle injury.

O’Connell did note that McCarthy would return to the starting lineup against the Detroit Lions in Week 9 if he is fully recovered, the NFL Network reported.

Game cameras showed Wentz slamming his helmet on the Vikings’ sideline out of apparent frustration. Wentz later made it clear that the injury ultimately did not hamper his throwing ability.

“I don’t think so,” Wentz said. “I don’t think throwing wise. That’s honestly why I felt confident to go. I felt I could do my job. I thought I could throw the ball. Thankfully, you don’t need your left shoulder all that much to throw the football. So mechanically, throwing wise, I felt like I could do everything I needed to do.”

Reserve quarterback Max Brosmer briefly entered Thursday’s contest, completing three of his four pass attempts in the fourth quarter.

O’Connell acknowledged that he had considered inserting the rookie signal-caller earlier in the game.

“Yeah we did,” O’Connell said. “Carson’s a veteran player. He understands, kind of, some of our circumstances tonight. I think it’s very difficult to ask a rookie to go in there for his first performance and have to be kind of weathering it a little bit for the group.

“I did think about that at different times in the game but at the same time, the confidence we have in Max and the upside we see in Max is real. You also don’t want to send him out there and force a level of figure-it-outness that’s probably beyond a guy playing for the first time.”

The Vikings have now dropped back-to-back games.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ two-game winning streak ended Monday night as the Lions dominated the Bucs on the way to a 24-9 victory.

However, much of the postgame chatter centered around the game’s officiating – not the Lions’ performance. In the fourth quarter, Tampa Bay quarterback Baker Mayfield confronted one of the referees.

Mayfield was later asked about the heated exchange. He proceeded to share his thoughts on his experience with officiating on Monday night.

“A third-down defensive holding call that wasn’t called, and also still pretty damn confused about the double review,” Mayfield said. “A lot of things in that game that were a little questionable … I work my ass off, and I put a lot into this game, so when [calls are made] that I don’t think are deemed fair, I’m going to let somebody know.”

The controversial review Mayfield referenced happened in the second half after the Heisman Trophy winner completed a short pass to Tampa Bay tight end Cade Otton on fourth down.

Following a challenge from the Lions, officials initially upheld the ruling that Otton completed the catch. It was also determined that Otton gained the necessary yardage for a first down. However, a referee returned to the video review monitor and ultimately announced that the call on the field had been reversed.

The reversal granted the Lions possession and also resulted in the restoration of a timeout.

An overturned play earlier in the game also sparked outrage. Referees ruled a three-yard pass intended for Otton was intercepted by the Lions.

Aside from the officiating controversy, the Bucs had little success finding a counterpunch to the Lions’ running game. Jahmyr Gibbs rushed for 136 yards and scored two touchdowns, while running back David Montgomery added 21 yards for the Lions.

By contrast, Tampa Bay managed to generate a total of 41 yards on the ground.

Rodgers was celebrating a 68-yard catch-and-run for six by tight end Pat Freiermuth that gave Pittsburgh a late lead against the Cincinnati Bengals, but when offensive tackle Broderick Jones tried to join Rodgers, the moment went awry. Jones jumped on top of Rodgers, and both of them fell to the turf.

Rodgers was heated, and he gave a straight answer as to why on Wednesday.

“What you don’t see in the video is right after the throw, he’s coming over to me and shaking me and shaking me,” Rodgers said about Jones. “I texted him, I said, ‘Hey, I love your energy, I love everything you’re about. But also, I’m 41. You can’t be out there tackling me.’”

Fair enough, Aaron.

STEELERS’ BRODERICK JONES WARNS HE MAY TACKLE AARON RODGERS AGAIN DESPITE ANGER OVER CELEBRATION HIT

The celebration didn’t last long for the Steelers though, as Joe Flacco had his coming-out party in his first Bengals home game since being traded by the Cleveland Browns.

Flacco finished his great night with a game-winning drive to beat their AFC North rival, 33-31.

Rodgers threw for 249 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions in the loss. And Jones did deserve to celebrate given Rodgers wasn’t sacked once despite the loss.

While Rodgers doesn’t want Jones to tackle him again, the 6-foot-5, 311-pound tackle didn’t rule out it never happening again.

“It’s just the energy that he brings and that I bring,” he told reporters on Tuesday. “He told me, ‘Don’t lose the fire,’ and I told him the same. We shall see on Sunday after he throws another touchdown. I might tackle him again.”

It’ll be a special Sunday for Rodgers, who will face his former Green Bay Packers squad for the first time since he departed for the New York Jets two seasons ago. Rodgers obviously has storied history with the franchise that took him 24th overall in the 2005 NFL Draft.

He commented on facing the Packers, saying he doesn’t “have any animosity toward the organization.”

“I wish that things had been better in our last year there, but I have a great relationship with a lot of people still in that organization, and this is not a revenge game for me,” he told ESPN. “I’m just excited to see some of those guys and be on ‘Sunday Night Football’ again.”

With the primetime lights shining down on Acrisure Stadium on Sunday night, Rodgers may not consider this a revenge game, but he sure hopes to score a lot of touchdowns against his former team.

He’s just hoping to stay upright after throwing them.

The Kansas City Chiefs offensive lineman Josh Simmons was selected in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft and was figured to be a main piece of the team’s offense moving forward.

The former Ohio State standout has played in five games this season, but has missed the last two under mysterious circumstances. Simmons was listed on the injury report last week as missing practice due to personal reasons. He was not on the injury report ahead of the team’s game against the Detroit Lions.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid told reporters he didn’t have any updates on Simmons. He said general manager Brett Veach was handling things in Simmons’ regard and “we’ll just move on with that.”

Team owner Clark Hunt was asked about Simmons during the NFL fall meeting.

“I really can’t comment,” he told ESPN.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes suggested Simmons was dealing with a serious problem. A separate report indicated that he returned home to deal with a family matter.

“I’ll keep conversations kind of between us,” Mahomes said, via the New York Post. “But I’m always praying for him. I’m praying for all my teammates, so I’m always praying for him. I’ll just keep everything else kind of private to us.”

The Chiefs seemed to be more cohesive on offense in the last two weeks with major victories over the Lions and Las Vegas Raiders.

Here is a look back at some of the biggest betting scandals in professional sports.

In 1920, eight members of the Chicago White Sox were indicted by a Chicago grand jury for fixing the 1919 World Series. It is known as the “Black Sox Scandal.” The jury returned a not guilty verdict on the players, but White Sox owner Charles Comiskey suspended the players, including “Shoeless” Joe Jackson. A year after the suspension, they were banned permanently by new baseball Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis. In 1946, Hockey Hall of Famer Babe Pratt was suspended for gambling. He was reinstated weeks later, with the NHL Board of Governors issuing a warning that any further instances of gambling would lead to a lifetime suspension for a player. In 1948, two years after the NHL Board of Governors’ warning, Billy Taylor and Don Gallinger were issued lifetime bans for betting on games. In 1951, four members of the Adolph Rupp-coached Kentucky Wildcats were accused of taking bribes from gamblers for an NIT game against Loyola in the 1948-1949 season. There were 35 active and former players accused of fixing at least 86 games between 1947 and 1951. An NCAA investigation found several violations, which led to the cancellation of Kentucky’s 1952-53 season. In 1989, Cincinnati Reds legend Pete Rose received a lifetime ban for gambling on games. Rose was found to have placed numerous bets on the Reds to win from 1985-1987 while he played and managed the team. He admitted to gambling in 2004 after years of claiming his innocence. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred posthumously removed Rose from the permanently ineligible list in May 2025, months after his death, allowing Rose to finally be considered for the Baseball Hall of Fame. Rose is baseball’s all-time leader in hits with 4,256.

In 1996, 13 Boston College football players were suspended for gambling. Two of the players bet against their own team during a 45-17 loss to Syracuse. Head coach Dan Henning informed school officials upon hearing allegations of players placing bets with bookies and resigned. No evidence of point-shaving was found. In 2007, assistant coach Rick Tocchet was placed on two years of probation after pleading guilty to conspiracy and promoting gambling as an assistant coach with the Phoenix Coyotes. He was reinstated by the NHL the following season. Also, initially implicated in a gambling scheme titled “Operation Slapshot” involving a New Jersey-based ring were several players; Wayne Gretzky’s wife, Janet Jones; and Gretzky’s former agent and-then Coyotes general manager Michael Barnett. Tocchet is currently the head coach of the Philadelphia Flyers. In 2008, NBA referee Tim Donaghy pleaded guilty to wire fraud and transmitting betting information for taking thousands of dollars from a gambler in exchange for inside tips on games, including games he worked. He was sentenced by a federal judge to 15 months behind bars.In 2023, golfer Phil Mickelson was alleged to have wagered more than $1 billion over the last three decades in a book written by gambler Billy Walters. In the book, Walters wrote that Mickelson wanted to bet $400,000 on the 2012 Ryder Cup when he played for the United States. The six-time major winner denied betting on the Ryder Cup and wrote in a social media post that he has stopped gambling. Mickelson said he crossed the line from moderation to addiction. In 2023, Ottawa Senators forward Shane Pinto was suspended 41 games for sports gambling. The NHL said there was no evidence that Pinto bet on hockey, and Pinto did not reveal any details upon his return to the Senators.

In March 2024, the Los Angeles Dodgers fired Ippei Mizuhara, the interpreter and close friend of newly acquired two-way star Shohei Ohtani, following reports regarding his ties to an illegal bookmaker. Three months later, Mizuhara pleaded guilty in federal court to bank and tax fraud for stealing nearly $17 million from Ohtani’s bank account. He spent the money to cover his growing gambling bets and debts with an illegal bookmaker, plus $325,000 worth of baseball cards and his own medical bills. Mizuhara capitalized on the language barrier to keep Ohtani’s financial advisers from understanding their client, and, at times, Mizuhara even impersonated the player to the bank to prolong the fraud. In April 2024, the NBA banned Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter after a league probe found he disclosed confidential information to sports bettors and wagered on games. Porter even bet on the Raptors to lose. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver called Porter’s actions “blatant.” The investigation started after unusual gambling patterns about Porter’s performance on March 20, 2024, against the Sacramento Kings. The league determined Porter gave a bettor information about his own health status prior to that game and said that another individual — known to be an NBA bettor — placed an $80,000 bet that Porter would not hit the numbers set for him in parlays through an online sports book. That bet would have won $1.1 million. In June 2024, San Diego Padres infielder Tucupita Marcano was banned for life by MLB for betting on baseball. MLB said Marcano placed 387 baseball bets totaling more than $150,000 with a legal sportsbook in 2022 and 2023. The 24-year-old Venezuelan, with 149 games of major league experience, became the first active player in a century banned for life because of gambling. Also in 2024, Oakland Athletics pitcher Michael Kelly was suspended for one year for betting on baseball while in the minor leagues, and three minor leaguers were banned for one year for betting on big league games: pitchers Jay Groome of San Diego and Andrew Saalfrank of Arizona and infielder José Rodríguez of Philadelphia. Each of those four players wagered under $1,000. Saalfrank and Rodríguez played previously in the majors.

In February 2025, umpire Pat Hoberg was fired by MLB for sharing his legal sports gambling accounts with a friend who bet on baseball games and for intentionally deleting electronic messages pertinent to the league’s investigation. While MLB said the probe did not uncover evidence Hoberg personally bet on baseball or manipulated games, MLB senior vice president of on-field operations Michael Hill recommended on May 24, 2024, that Hoberg be fired. Manfred upheld Hill’s decision. Among the highest-rated umpires at judging the strike zone, Hoberg could apply for reinstatement no earlier than 2026 spring training. MLB said the friend made 141 baseball bets between April 2, 2021, and Nov. 1, 2023, totaling almost $214,000 with an overall win of nearly $35,000. Eight of the bets involved games where Hoberg was working. In July 2025, Major League Baseball placed Cleveland Guardians pitcher Luis Ortiz on non-disciplinary paid leave due to a gambling probe. Nearly a month later, two-time American League Reliever of the Year Emmanuel Clase joined him. MLB extended Clase and Ortiz’s paid leave “until further notice while MLB continues its investigation.” There was no update on the gambling probe at the time of this writing. In September 2025, the NCAA announced it was investigating potential violations of sports betting rules involving 13 former men’s basketball players who competed for Eastern Michigan, Temple, Arizona State, New Orleans, North Carolina A&T and Mississippi Valley State. The NCAA’s integrity monitoring program and network of sources flagged text messages and direct messages on social media platforms and revealed unusual betting activities for regular-season games. The violations include student-athletes betting on and against their own teams, sharing information with third parties for purposes of sports betting, manipulating scoring or outcomes and/or refusing to participate in the investigation.
