Paleontologists have finally solved the mystery behind an elusive “sword dragon” skeleton found on the U.K.’s Jurassic Coast.

In an Oct. 10 press release from the University of Manchester, officials said the skeleton — found near Dorset’s Gold Cap in 2001 — is a newly identified species of ichthyosaur.

Alive around the same time as dinosaurs, ichthyosaurs were air-breathing marine reptiles that once “ruled the ancient oceans,” per officials.

TERRIFYING ANCIENT PREDATOR WITH ‘POWERFUL CLAWS’ UNEARTHED, ITS LAST MEAL STILL IN ITS JAWS

The ancient reptile has been named Xiphodracon goldencapensis, or the “Sword Dragon of Dorset.” Scientists say it dates back to the Pliensbachian period, roughly 193 to 184 million years ago.

Dean Lomax, an honorary research fellow at Manchester University, was one of the paleontologists who gave the creature its new name, which he said was one of the “coolest things” about his line of work.

Scientists have identified a new species of ichthyosaur discovered on the U.K.’s Jurassic Coast, naming it the “Sword Dragon of Dorset.” (Dean Lomax / University of Manchester)

“We opted for Xiphodracon because of the long, sword-like snout — xipho from Greek xiphos for sword — and dracon, Greek and Latin for dragon, in reference to ichthyosaurs being referred to as ‘sea dragons’ for over 200 years,” he said.

Paleontologists said the Xiphodracon measured around 10 feet long and ate fish and squid.

“The remains even show what may be traces of its last meal,” the press release added.

“It is probably the world’s most complete prehistoric reptile from the Pliensbachian period.”

The ichthyosaur intrigued experts for over two decades, not just for the mystery behind its species, but because of its exceptional condition.

“The fossil is almost perfectly preserved in three dimensions,” the university press release said.

“The skeleton includes a skull with [an] enormous eye socket and a long sword-like snout.”

The ancient reptile “is the only known example of its kind in existence and helps to fill an important gap in the evolutionary fossil record of ichthyosaurs.”

Lomax said he saw the skeleton for the first time in 2016.

“Back then, I knew it was unusual, but I did not expect it to play such a pivotal role in helping to fill a gap in our understanding of a complex faunal turnover during the Pliensbachian,” he said.

He described Xiphodracon as a “missing piece of the ichthyosaur puzzle,” as its discovery helps researchers understand the extinction timeline better.

Eight Americans were arrested in the Caribbean on Tuesday after authorities found “high-powered weapons” and a “substantial quantityof ammunition” on their boat, police said.

The Royal Bahamas Police Force (RBPF) said in a news release that officers from the Alice Town Police Station worked with the Bahamas Customs Department to search a vessel docked at a port on Bimini, a chain of western islands some 50 miles east of Miami, Florida, on Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. The officers were “acting on intelligence,” the RBPF said, but they did not specify what information they had.

The 10 occupants aboard the boat, which included eight Americans, one South African and another from Guyana, were taken into custody, the RBPF said. Those who were arrested range in age from 21 to 62, police noted. The RBPF did not identify them.

Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth said on Wednesday that the U.S. military has carried out another strike in the Eastern Pacific targeting alleged terrorists he says were engaged in narco-trafficking.

Three suspected narco-terrorists were killed, according to Hegseth. The strikes were ordered at the direction of President Donald Trump.

Hegseth said the Pentagon conducted “yet another lethal kinetic strike on a vessel operated by a Designated Terrorist Organization (DTO). Yet again, the now-deceased terrorists were engaged in narco-trafficking in the Eastern Pacific.”

“The vessel was known by our intelligence to be involved in illicit narcotics smuggling, was transiting along a known narco-trafficking route, and was carrying narcotics,” he continued. “Three male narco-terrorists were aboard the vessel during the strike, which was conducted in international waters. All three terrorists were killed and no U.S. forces were harmed in this strike.”

This is the ninth vessel strike since September and the second strike reported in the Eastern Pacific. A total of 37 have reportedly been killed while two survived and were later repatriated to their home countries.

TRUMP UNLEASHES US MILITARY POWER ON CARTELS. IS A WIDER WAR LOOMING?

A U.S. military drone strike ordered by President Trump destroyed a vessel in the Eastern Pacific on Oct. 22, 2025, killing three suspected narco-terrorists, according to the Department of War. (Department of War)

“These strikes will continue, day after day,” Hegseth said on Wednesday. “These are not simply drug runners—these are narco-terrorists bringing death and destruction to our cities. These DTOs are the ‘Al Qaeda’ of our hemisphere and will not escape justice. We will find them and kill them, until the threat to the American people is extinguished.”

The Pentagon has refused to release the identities of those killed or evidence of drugs on board.

The Trump administration has been scrutinized in recent weeks over the strikes, including by Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., who raised concerns about killing people without due process and the possibility of killing innocent people.

In a recent interview, Paul cited Coast Guard statistics that show a significant percentage of boats boarded for suspicion of drug trafficking are innocent.

The senator has also argued that if the administration plans to engage in a war with Venezuela, as it has targeted boats in recent weeks it claims are transporting drugs for the Venezuela-linked Tren de Aragua gang, it must seek a declaration of war from Congress.

President Donald Trump on Saturday said Hamas needs to start returning the bodies of deceased hostages held captive by the terror group during the war in Gaza “quickly, or the other countries involved in this GREAT PEACE will take action.”

While all the living hostages have been returned from Gaza, the remains of 13 deceased hostages have not been handed over by Hamas.

“Some of the bodies are hard to reach, but others they can return now and, for some reason, they are not,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post. “Perhaps it has to do with their disarming, but when I said, ‘Both sides would be treated fairly,’ that only applies if they comply with their obligations. Let’s see what they do over the next 48 hours. I am watching this very closely.”

Hours before Trump’s post, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee met with the families of Itay Chen and Omer Neutra, two U.S. citizens who were killed in the Oct. 7, 2023 attacks.

Their bodies are among those still being held by Hamas.

“We will not forget the lives of the hostages who died in the captivity of Hamas,” Rubio wrote in an X post. “We will not rest until their—and all—remains are returned.”

Authorities believed Chen, a 19-year-old dual U.S.-Israeli citizen, was kidnapped by Hamas on Oct. 7, 2023, but was later declared dead by the Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

Neutra, 21, an American-Israeli from New York, was killed in battle on Oct. 7, 2023.

Huckabee noted Rubio’s visit to Israel was “very productive in moving forward” the U.S.-brokered Gaza peace plan, adding the plan cannot work until all hostages, living and deceased, are released.

Qatar has played a significant role in efforts to negotiate peace and ceasefires in Gaza.

After months of wavering between confrontation and conciliation toward Moscow, President Donald Trump has imposed new sanctions on Russia’s two largest oil companies and canceled a planned summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin — signaling a renewed attempt to pressure the Kremlin without committing to deeper U.S. involvement in Ukraine’s war.

The measures, announced Wednesday, target Rosneft and Lukoil, key pillars of Russia’s energy sector, and mark the administration’s most significant sanctions package since Trump returned to office. But they also come after years of similar Western actions that have failed to slow Moscow’s military campaign.

“We canceled the meeting with President Putin. It just, it didn’t feel right to meet. It didn’t feel like we were going to get to the place we have to get,” Trump said Wednesday. “So I canceled it, but we’ll do it in the future.”

“Every time I speak to Vladimir, I have good conversations and then they don’t go anywhere. They just don’t go anywhere,” Trump added. Asked why he had chosen to impose sanctions on oil majors Lukoil and Rosneft now, he said, “I just felt it was time, we’ve waited a long time.”

WITKOFF SCRAMBLES FOR PEACE DEAL WITH RUSSIA AS SANCTIONS LOOM TARGETING INDIA, CHINA

Last week, Zelenskyy visited Washington hoping to secure a deal on Tomahawk missiles. But Putin got ahead of the meeting with a two-and-a-half-hour phone call with Trump one day earlier — and the Tomahawk deal was no more. ( Ukrainian Presidency / Handout/Anadolu via Getty Images)

The Treasury Department announced the designations under Executive Order 14024 for operating in the energy sector of the Russian Federation economy. The sanctions freeze all U.S.-linked assets belonging to Rosneft and Lukoil and prohibit American entities from doing business with them. Dozens of subsidiaries are also affected, effectively extending the restrictions across much of Russia’s global oil and gas network.

“Given President Putin’s refusal to end this senseless war, Treasury is sanctioning Russia’s two largest oil companies that fund the Kremlin’s war machine,” said Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. “Treasury is prepared to take further action if necessary to support President Trump’s effort to end yet another war.”

China’s state oil giants have already begun suspending purchases of seaborne Russian crude following the U.S. sanctions. According to multiple trade sources cited by Reuters, PetroChina, Sinopec, CNOOC and Zhenhua Oil have halted short-term deals with Rosneft and Lukoil, citing compliance concerns.

The pullback — along with reports that Indian refiners are sharply cutting imports from Moscow — is expected to strain Russia’s oil revenues and tighten global supply, driving up prices for non-sanctioned crude from the Middle East, Africa and Latin America.

Chinese embassy spokesperson Liu Pengyu told Fox News Digital in response to the report: “China’s normal energy cooperation with other countries in the world, including Russia, is legitimate and legal, and China opposes any form of unilateral sanctions and economic coercion.”

TRUMP AND PUTIN’S RELATIONSHIP TURNS SOUR AS PRESIDENT PUSHES FOR RESOLUTION WITH UKRAINE

The sanctions were announced just days after Trump abruptly canceled plans for a trilateral summit in Hungary with Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy — a meeting that had been billed as a potential breakthrough in efforts to end the conflict. The reversal continues a pattern that has defined Trump’s approach to Russia since returning to office: alternating bursts of engagement and confrontation that make it difficult for allies and adversaries to predict his next move.

Last week, Zelenskyy visited Washington hoping to secure a deal for Tomahawk long-range missiles. But Putin preempted the meeting with a two-and-a-half-hour call with Trump the day before — and the missile deal evaporated.

“Now is the time to stop the killing and for an immediate ceasefire,” Bessent said in announcing the sanctions. “A permanent peace depends entirely on Russia’s willingness to negotiate in good faith.”

Analysts say the sanctions are aimed at regaining leverage and forcing both Moscow and Kyiv back to the negotiating table after months of stalemate. Trump would often meet with one side or the other and come out more sympathetic to the viewpoint of whoever he’d just met with.

An unnamed diplomat told Fox News Digital, “It’s fundamentally making both sides think they can manipulate him. Which doesn’t make either side want to negotiate, because both believe they can still rally Trump to their side.”

Now, Trump says he doesn’t want to “waste time.”

TRUMP DEMANDS NATO ALLIES HALT RUSSIAN OIL PURCHASES BEFORE NEW US SANCTIONS

Andrew D’Anieri, associate director of the Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Center, said the sanctions are a welcome step but only part of a broader effort required to curb Russia’s war financing. “The Trump administration’s decision to sanction Russian oil majors Rosneft and Lukoil is a welcome move to make it more difficult for Russia to continue its war on Ukraine,” he said. “It’s significant that these designations come just a week after the U.K. sanctioned the same entities; sanctions have a greater effect when Western countries work in concert.”

He cautioned, however, that implementation will determine the outcome. “Enforcement of these sanctions will be the key to cutting into Moscow’s oil revenues,” D’Anieri said. “Those who do purchase Russian oil will demand a steep discount for evading U.S. sanctions, which itself will hurt Russian revenues.”

War in Ukraine has dragged on for over three and a half years.  (Vladyslav Ukolov/Suspilne Ukraine/JSC "UA:PBC"/Global Images Ukraine via Getty Images)

“If Trump truly wants to end the war, he should continue to ratchet up the pressure on Moscow, including the threat of secondary sanctions and further military aid to Ukraine,” he added. “This one move alone won’t be enough to get Putin to negotiate in good faith, but it’s a step in the right direction.”

Former National Security Council official Jason Israel described the difference between the Biden and Trump approaches as one of philosophy, not objective. “Both want to help Ukraine negotiate from strength and avoid direct NATO involvement,” he said. “But Biden worked through European partners to uphold the rules-based order. Trump has taken a more transactional approach — selling weapons to Ukraine funded by European partners — with the goal of speeding negotiations and shifting more of the cost to allies.”

Trump has long emphasized that he wants to end the war and avoid indefinite U.S. involvement. “Let it be cut the way it is,” he said earlier this month, referring to Ukraine’s divided territory. “It’s cut up right now… They can negotiate something later on down the line. But for now, both sides of the conflict should stop at the battle line — go home, stop fighting, stop killing people.”

The sanctions, coupled with the canceled summit, suggest a new phase in Trump’s balancing act: applying economic pressure while leaving the door open to a future deal. “I don’t want to have a wasted meeting; I don’t want to have a waste of time,” Trump told reporters Tuesday.

A transgender swimmer who was at the center of a national controversy earlier this year has been banned from World Aquatics until 2030 and stripped of all competitive results from June 2022 to October 2024 after refusing to take a sex verification test.

Ana Caldas was listed on the Aquatics Integrity Unit’s suspended persons list this week for violating articles in the World Aquatics integrity code related to providing false information and defining the criteria for men’s and women’s competition categories.

World Aquatics changed its gender eligibility policy in 2022, limiting the participation of transgender women in the women’s category to those who transitioned before the age of 12 or before they reached Tanner Stage 2 of puberty.

Caldas drew national scrutiny in May after winning five gold medals at a U.S. Masters Swimming event in San Antonio, Texas, prompting outcry from some of Caldas’ opponents. Caldas dominated in the women’s age 45-49 category in five races, including the 50- and 100-yard breaststroke, the freestyle and the 100-yard individual medley.

Louisiana woman and long-time swimmer Wendy Enderle, who competed against Caldas at that event and previous ones, said she felt “betrayed” because she had never been made aware of Caldas’ birth sex.

On Thursday, Enderle provided a statement to Fox News Digital addressing World Aquatics’ decision to ban Caldas until 2030.

“I applaud World Aquatics for their decision to uphold fairness and integrity in competitive swimming. I feel vindicated and validated, not only for myself, but for all girls and women who have been forced to compete against men masquerading as women in our sports,” Enderle said.

“Getting to stand on the podium at Masters World Championships in any position is a big deal! I feel for the women who were denied that opportunity by Ana/Hannah/Hugo in 2024 when he stood on three podiums in Doha. I am glad that the women who lost that opportunity will be given their rightful places and awards.”

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton launched a lawsuit against USMS in July over the San Antonio incident.

“I’m suing U.S. Masters Swimming for engaging in illegal practices by allowing men to compete in women’s competitions,” Paxton said in a post on X announcing the lawsuit. “The organization has cowered to radical activists pushing gender warfare, and this lawsuit will hold USMS accountable for its actions.”

Vice President JD Vance said Thursday that a vote by Israeli lawmakers to annex the West Bank was a “very stupid political stunt.”

A bill applying Israeli law to the occupied West Bank, which effectively would annex the territory for Israel, passed a vote Wednesday in Israel’s parliament as Vance was visiting the country, according to Reuters. It was the first of four votes needed for the proposal to become law. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud Party did not back the legislation, which was pushed by lawmakers outside his ruling coalition, the news agency added.

“That was weird. I was sort of confused by that,” Vance told reporters on Thursday when asked about the vote. “Now I actually asked somebody about it, and they told me that it was a symbolic vote, some symbolic vote to recognize or a symbolic vote to annex the West Bank. I mean, what I would say to that is when I asked about it, somebody told me it was a political stunt, that it had no practical significance, it was purely symbolic.”

“I mean look, if it was a political stunt, it was a very stupid political stunt, and I personally take some insult to it. The West Bank is not going to be annexed by Israel,” Vance added. “The policy of the Trump administration is that the West Bank will not be annexed by Israel. That will continue to be our policy. And if people want to take symbolic votes, they can do that, but we certainly weren’t happy about it.”

Following Vance’s comments, a top member of Netanyahu’s Likud Party announced Thursday that the Israeli prime minister told him not to advance proposals regarding the annexation of the West Bank, according to Israeli media.

“The Knesset vote on annexation was a deliberate political provocation by the opposition to sow discord during Vice President JD Vance’s visit to Israel. The two bills were sponsored by opposition members of the Knesset,” Netanyahu’s office wrote on X.

“The Likud party and the religious parties (the principal coalition members) did not vote for these bills, except for one disgruntled Likud member who was recently fired from the chairmanship of a Knesset committee. Without Likud support, these bills are unlikely to go anywhere,” it added.

Possible annexation of the West Bank has been floated in Israel in response to a string of countries moving to recognize a Palestinian state, according to The Associated Press.

Israel captured the West Bank, east Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip in the 1967 Mideast war. The Palestinians want all three territories to form their future state. They, and much of the international community, say annexation would all but end any remaining possibility of a two-state solution, the AP reported.

More than half a million Jewish settlers now live in the West Bank in some 130 settlements.

“I will not allow Israel to annex the West Bank,” President Donald Trump said in late September in the Oval Office. “I will not allow it. It’s not going to happen.”

The deputy Palestinian ambassador to the United Nations, Majed Bamya, told the U.N. Security Council on Thursday that Palestinians “appreciate the clear message” the Trump administration has sent in opposition to annexation.

A 13-year-old boy in New Zealand was hospitalized and underwent major surgery after swallowing as many as 100 magnets.

The teen, who suffered four days of stomach pain before being admitted to Tauranga Hospital, had ingested between 80 and 100 high-power magnets, each around 5×2 millimeters in size, according to a Friday report in the New Zealand Medical Journal.

“Accessibility to high-power magnets is a rising concern for our pediatric population, which may be due to the ability to purchase from online marketplaces at inexpensive prices,” the report states.

An X-ray revealed four chains of magnets stuck together inside his abdomen. Surgeons operated on the boy, removing the magnets and damaged sections of his intestines. He was released from the hospital eight days later, according to the report.

Ingesting multiple magnets can cause life-threatening injuries. Surgical intervention, which is frequently required, can also lead to complications later in life.

New Zealand and Australia have both banned the sale of small high-powered magnets. However, enforcing those bans online is more difficult, the report states.

In this instance, the magnets were reportedly purchased from online marketplace Temu, according to the report.

A spokesperson for Temu told Fox News Digital it is investigating the incident and has reached out to the authors of the report for more details.

“We are sorry to learn about the reported incident and wish the boy a full and speedy recovery,” the Temu spokesperson told Fox News Digital in an email. “We take product safety very seriously and continuously monitor our platform to ensure sellers are complying with the safety regulations of the markets they are doing business in.”

Temu has not been able to identify the specific product listing or confirm whether the magnets were purchased from its online marketplace, according to the spokesperson.

“Nonetheless, our teams are reviewing relevant listings to ensure full compliance with local safety requirements,” the spokesperson said. “Any products found to be non-compliant will be removed, and we will take firm action against any sellers found to have breached our platform rules or local regulations.”

Indonesian Minister of Sport Erick Thohir has responded to the recent global backlash and the consequences of denying visas to the Israeli national gymnastics team for the world championships in Jakarta.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended this week that no international sporting events be held in Indonesia, adding it is ending any discussions with the country about hosting the Olympics in the future after the decision to bar Team Israel.

Thohir defended his country’s decision in a statement Thursday.

“We adhere to the principle of maintaining security, public order and the public interest in hosting every international event,” Thohir said.

During a press conference Friday, Thohir gave a more elaborate response.

“This is indeed part of maintaining our nation’s dignity, in line with the 1945 constitution,” he said, via Indonesian outlet Detikcom. “We must be an independent nation, but, at the same time, we must also be a nation that maintains global security. … This is something that is still under discussion.”

Indonesia is the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation and has long been a staunch supporter of Palestinians. The scheduled participation of Israeli athletes had sparked intense opposition within the country.

Indonesia was previously stripped of its right to host football’s under-20 World Cup when the governor of Bali refused to host Team Israel in a game in 2023. In July of that same year, Indonesia pulled out of hosting the Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC) World Beach Games following controversy over Israel’s participation.

Morinari Watanabe, the president of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG), spoke out about it and addressed the issue Saturday at the world championships.

“I agree [with] the statement of the IOC,” Watanabe said. “Sports is separate from politics. All athletes have an equal right to participate in the sports event. The IOC and FIG must protect that right. This is for the Olympic charter we are writing.”

Watanabe added that FIG “deeply regrets” the lack of protection for the Israeli gymnasts but expressed respect for the Indonesian government’s decision.

“At FIG, we deeply regret that we are unable to protect the rights of one country’s athletes this time. But, on the other hand, with the global situation changing, how to protect participating athletes is a challenge,” he said. “We have heard from the Indonesian government that this was a measure of ensuring safety of participating athletes, including one country’s athletes, and also people of the city, Jakarta city. So, the reason is not political. This is what we are hear[ing].”

Indonesia’s sanction is just the latest example of restrictions placed on Israel’s sports teams and fans in recent months.

The Israel Premier Tech cycling team has been excluded from an upcoming race in Italy, the Giro dell’Emilia, scheduled for Oct. 4, over potentially disruptive pro-Palestinian protests.

The UEFA Europa League, Europe’s biggest soccer body, was reportedly moving toward a vote to suspend Israel over the war in Gaza in September.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino announced no action would be taken against the team Oct. 3. He reportedly later met privately at FIFA headquarters with the leader of the Palestinian soccer federation, Jibril Rajoub, and praised his organization “for their resilience at this time,” per The Associated Press.

Fans of Israeli teams have been barred from recent major events as well.

Fans of the Israeli soccer team Maccabi Tel Aviv are prohibited from attending a Europa League game in Birmingham, England, Nov. 6, over safety concerns, after the team’s fans were attacked in Amsterdam at a game against Ajax last fall.

North Korea test fired multiple short-range ballistic missiles on Wednesday, just days before President Donald Trump is expected to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping and other leaders in South Korea.

South Korea’s military said the missiles, which were the first launched by its neighbor in five months, originated from an area south of Pyongyang and flew about 220 miles toward the northeast. The missiles did not land in the sea, the military added.

Trump is set to leave for Asia at the end of the week in what will be his first trip to the region during his second term. He plans to go to Malaysia first for a regional summit, and then head to Japan before traveling on to South Korea for an Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting.

The president is expected to visit the South Korean city of Gyeongju ahead of the summit for bilateral meetings with leaders including Xi and South Korean President Lee Jae Myung.

South Korea’s military said Wednesday that it remains ready to repel any provocations by North Korea based on its alliance with the United States.

Japan’s Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi also told reporters that Tokyo was closely communicating with Washington and Seoul, including by sharing real-time missile warning data.

Wednesday’s ballistic missile launches by North Korea were the first of their kind since the country tested short-range systems on May 8 that simulated nuclear counterstrikes against U.S. and South Korean forces.

Earlier this month, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un displayed a new long-range intercontinental ballistic missile at a military parade in Pyongyang that included foreign leaders.

The yet-to-be-tested Hwasong-20 was described by the state-owned Korean Central News Agency as having the “most powerful nuclear strategic weapons system.”

The government also displayed shorter-range ballistic, cruise and supersonic missiles at the military parade, which marked 80 years since the founding of the Worker’s Party.

Kim said at the parade that the military “must continue to evolve into an invincible force that eliminates all threats.”
